Wu Fei is a young Chinese composer and guzheng virtuoso who breaks the traditional rules of her instrument to create a new and exciting form of Asian music. Her innovative ideas come from her free spirit and from artistic exchange and collaborations with astounding American and European innovators like Fred Frith, Carla Kihlstedt, and Helge A. Norbakken (all featured on this disc).
A Distant Youth is her debut CD, recorded in the Italian Alps, Venice, Parma, and Guerrilla Studio in Oakland, CA. Wu Fei has composed music for solo instruments, string quartets, choirs, orchestras, modern and traditional dance, film, and various chamber ensembles. She is also featured on Fred Frith’s newest album of film music entitled Eye to Ear II, which received high acclaim from The Wire in April 2004.

A message fom Wu Fei – September 2007
It’s been an amazing journey since the beginning of making this album. Many kind-hearted people around the world have given me so much support. Without them, this record wouldn’t be here today.
First, I want to thank my producer, Giovanni, for believing in my music and for all the hard work he’s done to help me to develop my career, especially while the record industry is experiencing difficult times.
Thanks to Forrest Hill Records for giving my music global access.
Many thanks to the sound engineer/co-producer, Bruno, for working so hard since the very beginning of the making of this album. Also, thanks to Myles for making the U.S. recording sessions run so smoothly.
Thanks to the three wonderful photographers: Guido, Carlo, Matteo. The world looks even more beautiful and artistic through your camera lenses.
Many thanks and much love to Fred, Carla, and Helge–3 amazing artists, mentors, and friends! It is an honor to have your sonic spirit to help deepen my “thoughts” in this record.
Special thanks to Parker for the tremendous love and support of my dreams.
Lastly, I want to thank my mother and father. They are the heroes of my life, and my biggest fans in the world! They have taught me to be a kind and honest human being before anything else.
